Monterey County has a rich history, such as Cannery Row popularized by John Steinbeck. However, today it's largely a tourist destination and playground for the wealthy due to its beautiful coastal real estate. Pebble Beach boasts one of the best-rated and most expensive golf courses in the nation. In addition to prime shopping, dining and entertainment, the outdoor activities in Monterey afford visitors some of the most incredibly natural beauty in the state. The drive to Big Sur along Highway One is famous, as is the Tassajara Hot Springs, the Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail, Moss Landing State Beach and more.
The Detention Division of the Monterey County Jail consists of a Main Jail, Classification Unit and Rehabilitation Facility. The facility houses approximately 1,100 inmates both sentenced and unsentenced, who are housed in different units. Sentenced inmates usually are housed in open dormitories while unsentenced inmates are housed in single cells; the former participate in work programs while the latter do not.
