About Kern County
The population in 2012 in Kern County was significantly larger than in the year 2000 at 856,158 and 661,645 respectively. However, the county is not densely populated because the land area is so large at 8,141 square miles. Half of the population is employed by private businesses; 42% of the population is self-employed, which is quite large for the state; 8% is employed by the government and 1% of the population is unpaid due to working for a family agricultural business.
Kern County contains three different terrains: part of the Mojave Desert, San Joaquin River Valley and Sierra Nevada Mountains. Due to this merger of different outdoor terrains, the available outdoor activities are incredibly diverse and attract many visitors each year. Cities within Kern County include Tehachapi, Shafter, Lamont, Arvin, Rosamond, Wasco, Ridgecrest, Oildale, Delano and most importantly Bakersfield, which is located in the middle of all the action. The county has also played host to history in particular the first supersonic flight at Edwards Air Force Base.
The Lerdo Jail Facilities provide detention services to the county, including a minimum security facility as well as a combination maximum medium security facility. The former was constructed first, while the latter can support up to 374 inmates. Kern County also has a Pre-Trial facility that houses just over 1,200 inmates both from the county and surrounding areas via a contract.
