About Fresno County

Fresno County, located in the San Joaquin River Valley in California, had a 2012 population of 947,895, up from 799,407 at the turn of the century -- a substantial increase for the state. Although the population is large in Fresno County, so is the land area of 5,953, which results in only an average population density. Half of the population is employed by private businesses, 20% by the government and 31% of the population is self-employed.

Fresno County contains cities like Reedley, Sanger, of course Fresno, Clovis, and Selma. Outdoor activities are plentiful due to the abundance of forests and parks located within the eastern half of the county, such as Sierra National Forest and Kings Canyon National Park. Those more interested in indoor activities can visit the county's museums such as the Eastern Fresno County Historical Society Museum. Other activities include visiting the Fresno Zoo, festivals like fall harvest and spring blossom, as well as winter chocolate tasting.

Three jails service the county: South Annex Jail, North Annex Jail and the Mail Jail, all built between 1947 and 1993.
