About El Dorado County

The name of this county of course conjures up images of gold, and in fact it is part of the historic Gold Country, located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and its foothills. Like other parts of rural California, El Dorado County is known for its natural beauty, but even in that respect the county certainly stands out. For example, perhaps the most well-known area in the county is Lake Tahoe, the freshwater lake that borders the boundary of California and Nevada. This lake is an enormous tourist attraction for both states each year; popular activities include rafting, helicopter tours, hang gliding, camping, skiing at Sierra-At-Tahoe Ski Resort and Heavenly Ski Resort and golfing at resorts like Squaw Creek.

There's a lot more to do in El Dorado County than visit Lake Tahoe, however. The county contains many parks and natural areas including the Tahoe National Forest, the Pine Hill Ecological Reserve, Marshal Gold Discovery State Historic Park, Folsom Lake State Recreation Area, the Glen Alpine Springs Trailhead, the Eagle Falls Trailhead, Emerald Bay State Park, D. L. Bliss State Park, Desolation Wilderness and the El Dorado National Forest. Tourists also enjoy wineries like Nello Olivo, with its famous Italian varietals, to the Zinfandels of the Shenandoah Valley AVA, amongst several others.
