About Calaveras County

Calaveras County contains 10 different communities -- Dorringotn, Arnold, Avery, Murphys, Angels Camp, Copperopolis, Valley Springs, San Andreas, West Point and Mokelumme Hill CA. The 2012 population was 44,742, up from 40,554 at the turn of the century. Private organizations employ the vast majority of the population, while the government employs one quarter and 12% of the population is self-employed.

This county is a popular tourist destination due to its rich history and wide variety of indoor and outdoor attractions. Calaveras contains some of the richest dig sites of the entire gold rush, and touring the historic sites of gold country is a popular pastime for tourists today. During winter, downhill skiing and boarding, as well as cross country skiing and snowshoeing all attract visitors and residents alike. During spring and summer hiking, biking, water sports and exploration of natural areas like Ebbetts Pass National Scenic Byway and Calaveras Big Trees State Park takes precedence.

Convicted and pre-trial inmates are housed at the Calaveras County Adult Detention Facility, which adjoins the Sheriff's Office Building. The facility was recently completed in 2013, the first large-scale construction of a new jail in addition to the original Calaveras County Jail originally built in 1963. Improvements and modifications were made to this original structure as growth dictated, including the addition of a maximum security wing in 1999.
